Poor old CY Leung. Not only is he a complete non-entity as a politician – a man for whom the words “in the best interests of Hong Kongers” elicit no more than a vacant blink and a confused shake of the head – but he’s now been caricatured and repeatedly egged for all to see at the annual Lunar New Year fair in Victoria Park.
CY’s almost obsessive insistence recently that Hong Kong receive a formal apology from the Philippines for the 2010 Manila hostage crisis, may have been successful in deflecting the anger of some Hong Kongers to a more acceptable target, but The Democratic Party of Hong Kong took the opportunity this last week to remind everyone exactly where the source of Hong Kong’s political problems really lie.
As well as the egging, there were also specially designed rolls of toilet paper bearing the face of our Glorious Chief on sale. According to the party’s creative media division, the novelty paper aims to “bring politics into the household this new year,” which struck me as a remarkably tactful description of its intended use.
