Central Plaza Hong Kong: Up in the Sky Lobby

The Sky Lobby’s the limit. Or is it?

46 Floors Up

Not only is Central Plaza the grandest skyscraper in Hong Kong, it also offers some of the best views in Hong Kong. Forget paying $168 to get to the top of the ICC. Forget the pitiful experience offered by the Bank of China observation deck and the disappointment of IFC Two. Instead, get yourself to Wan Chai, and take a lift to the 46th floor Central Plaza Sky Lobby for one of the best free Hong Kong views in town.

At 78 storeys, Central Plaza is no longer the tallest building in Hong Kong. But when most Hong Kong observation decks never get past the 50th floor, height is rarely a factor in determining the best viewing experience. More important is the quality of that view – what you actually see and whether it’s worth going up there to see it.

Whereas some observation decks offer a few measly portholes out of which a restricted view of only one side of the building is all you are going to see, the Central Plaza Sky Lobby gives a 360° view of the city beyond its windows. The lobby is used as a transfer for employees to the upper floors of the building and, just like the main lobby, it is decked out in polished granite and feels almost like a grand hotel rather than an office block. The enormous floor to ceiling windows give great views, and best of all, it’s free.

You can see Wan Chai bustling below. You can look out over Happy Valley to the South and Causeway Bay and the eastern end of Victoria Harbour to the east. TST and Kowloon can be seen as well as Central in the west. Central Plaza is also perfectly positioned to view all of the other Hong Kong skyscrapers at a reasonable distance. All of which makes a trip to the 46th floor a thoroughly worthwhile experience.

How to reach the Central Plaza Sky Lobby

Central Plaza is located at 18 Harbour Road, Wan Chai, Hong Kong Island. The Sky Lobby is on the 46th floor of the building.

To get to the viewing deck from the main lobby, visitors need to take the escalator to the next level of the lobby where express lifts to the 46/F await.

There is currently no need to show I.D. or get a security pass. Just walk in and catch the lift.

The Sky Lobby is open to the public on weekdays from 8am to 8pm and on Saturday from 8am to 2pm.

Get Higher!

Generally, the 46th floor of Central Plaza is the limit for visitors. But it is possible to get higher.

If you want to see what it’s like to worship the almighty in one of the highest churches in the world (or just pretend to be doing so in order to check out the view), then in the 75th floor apex of Central Plaza, three floors from the top, the Sky City Church is waiting.

The idea of Walter Kwok, one of the three brothers that inherited the Sun Hung Kai property development company which built Central Plaza, the Sky City Church was his way of allowing visitors to get 75 floors closer to God. Everyone is welcome, as you would expect. The Sky guys “love God, love His church and love people.” So be afeared ye not.

The Sky City Church Central Plaza worship service takes place every Sunday at 11:00am.
